The Most Misunderstood Chord In Music?
What is "good taste in music" and on which objective grounds is it defined?
I have always preferred Plagal. Perfect cadence almost sounds too much to me sometimes
Nice! Tritone substitution indeed 🤘
Finally someone said it! The tritone substitution in fact is NOT a different chord, it’s just a simplified way of describing a very specific type of dominant!
Who’s this Willy Nilly guy everyone is talking about?
Essentially why tritone subs work
ugh this whole video sounded gorgeous
This is so great! Please do more episodes where you write music 🙏🏻
I had no idea Adam's live streams were available on YT, super excited to watch this. Piano and I have a long history (Paris conservatoire 48 years ago, I was 6), but I gotta say since I started following Adam 2-3 years ago, things have changed drastically. I practice his drills daily, I enjoy doing it, and it's very, very beneficial. Hugely grateful.
Couldn’t wait to hear that resolve. Too much crunchy tension especially with the timbre of that piano.
Fantastic😄
Black music is…
Great episode, you guys captured my feelings abt this album pretty well too. Loving the longer form eps, and this series in particular!
I can listen to this all day
The keystone of Western tonal language, V - I
I can't play anywhere near as beautifully as you, and my theory will never be close, however, I absolutely adore these shorts. They really do showcase the beauty of simplicity and the small nuances that different expressions can create. I wish I could play like this.
You're amazing. Really inspirational.
🎉 I was going to say the drummer was in front of the beat but prople might not of got the joke (the music was behind him in vid not his playing) as you were...
Really great to hear more advanced topics from you two and getting into each others' heads about what you're hearing, playing and thinking. Loving the long format. Now i want to try and play along with this whole thing!
Similar progression as Somebody’s Baby by Jackson Browne! Love that progression very much! 🖤🥀
I want so badly to learn jazz or music theory or whatever and elevate like you, but then I hear ugly chords like this. I do not understand this chord. I hate the sound of this chord. And yet, I know myself and my unlearned ears are the problem, not you or this chord.
It’s only “ugly“ out of context. This video explains the theory behind these chords, but if you use these chords in an actual progression with good voice leading they can sound gorgeous.
Don't confuse melody with harmony😏
crazy
The internet just lives to bully bass players and it ain’t right man😂 I respect my brothers and sisters anchoring the rhythm section ✌️✊
Great tune and video, but four dotted quavers in a row?! We need to see the beats and the division of the bar! Get yo’ ties out!
Mike Post has entered the chat.
I can listen and learn from Bob DeBoo all day! I just love his sound. I'm a pianist that wishes he could play upright bass! 😄. I always want to grab Bob's tracks and put them into Logic as my bass tracks when practicing!! They are so tasty!
You are killing me Adam!! 😂😂😂 That made me really laugh. Once again, Bob shows his AI brain/skills/ears...sheesh!! How many bass players can lay out the piano voicing on the bass? I think Peter and Bob set up the humor perfectly....nice!
I wouldn't say that I find some of the videos Peter refers to "discouraging". But I would say that I sometimes view a video and conclude that it's targeted at players who are more advanced than I am, so I kind of disregard the presentation. The same concepts could probably have been presented in a way that's targeted toward players of my lower level of ability. This points to an issue that I think is relevant in these educational videos: what level of player are they directed at? Like I said, even if the concepts are appropriate for all levels, sometimes (often, for me) the presentation seems targeted to players of higher ability than I have. E.g., in immediately jumping to doing some exercise at faster tempos. Usually, I can do the basic exercise, but I need to go much more slowly. And it takes a lot of time to get faster. So jumping to faster tempos quickly makes it feel like the video is not targeted at me.
Adam, I mentioned you in a book introduction that is being published through Mel Bay Publications. I've also written a book on Altered dominant chords/improvisation. Not for the traditional jazz guitarist, I can assure you. You would truly dig it. If you may be interested, I'd send you a complimentary copy.

People are always making wild statements and assumptions about B7Alt in my presence, this video is their comeuppance
"So What" and Joshua" from Four and More--THEY are FAST. I love you guys, and I'm a huge fan of Christian from seeing him live and from Sirius, but this isn't fast. I know you can do it...

The second chord sounds like “Christmastime is Here”
